Google Ads Management That Lowers Your Cost Per Lead

Search, Performance Max and remarketing campaigns built on tight keyword control, message-matched landing pages and honest conversion tracking.

Where the budget actually leaks

The first thing we do on an inherited Google Ads account is usually not to build anything. It is to open the search terms report and read what people genuinely typed before they clicked. That report is where the money is, and in most accounts we take over it has not been opened in months.

What sits in there is rarely flattering. Broad match quietly widening "CRM software" out to "free CRM", "CRM full form" and "CRM jobs salary" — a meaningful share of the month going to people researching a career rather than buying a product. Adding the negatives costs nothing and puts the same budget somewhere useful. No new creative, no new landing page, no extra spend.

The second leak is conversion tracking that counts the wrong thing. A conversion firing on every contact-page view. Three tags double-counting a single form. Smart Bidding pointed at a signal that has no relationship to revenue and then optimising toward it with real determination, which is considerably worse than running no automation at all.

We also hold an opinion that costs us work. Plenty of accounts do not need more campaigns, they need fewer. Splitting a modest budget across nine tightly themed campaigns feels organised and starves every one of them of the conversion volume the bidding needs in order to learn anything.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Budget disappears into broad keywords and irrelevant search terms
  • Clicks arrive but the landing page loses them before they enquire
  • Conversion tracking is missing or wrong, so the account optimises toward noise
  • Cost per lead keeps creeping up and nobody can explain why

How We Deliver Google Ads Differently

We manage Google Ads with the discipline of a trading desk: exact-intent keyword structures, negative keyword hygiene, ad copy tested against real search terms, landing pages built for the query, and conversion tracking that reports leads — not button clicks. Situations we are usually called about

Four of the briefs that come up most often, what we do about each, and the part that tends to get left out of the pitch.

The leads are cheap and completely useless

The situation

Cost per lead looks excellent in the report and sales has stopped bothering to call them. Usually a mix of broad match with no negatives, a form asking for nothing beyond a name and number, and bidding optimised for form fills rather than for anything that resembles revenue.

What we do

Tighten match types, build the negative list from the search terms report, add one qualifying question that a casual browser will not answer, and where the CRM allows it feed qualified-lead status back into Google so the bidding optimises on the outcome instead of the form.

The honest part

Cost per lead will rise, sometimes sharply, and the report looks worse for a while. That is the trade, and it needs agreeing in advance rather than defending afterwards.

Costs climbed and nothing else changed

The situation

Same campaigns, same budget, noticeably fewer clicks. Usually a new competitor bidding hard, seasonal auction pressure, or a match-type change that widened reach without anyone intending it.

What we do

Check the auction insights before changing anything. If it is genuine competitive pressure, the answer is rarely to outbid — it is to improve the landing page and ad relevance so the same position costs less, and to concede the terms where the economics no longer work.

The honest part

Sometimes the honest conclusion is that a keyword has become unaffordable for your margin. Walking away from it is a legitimate outcome and we will recommend it.

You are paying for your own brand name

The situation

Somebody notices you are buying clicks from people typing your company name — traffic you would arguably get for nothing.

What we do

Often worth keeping, but not automatically. If competitors bid on your name, brand terms are cheap defence. If nobody does and you own the organic result outright, we will test pausing and watch total enquiries rather than paid ones.

The honest part

That test needs a few weeks of clean data and the nerve not to panic in the first one. Brand campaigns flatter every report they appear in, which is exactly why they go unexamined for years.

Performance Max is spending well and explaining nothing

The situation

One campaign absorbing most of the budget, with limited visibility into placements, search terms or which asset group is doing the work.

What we do

Separate brand from non-brand so the reported performance is not simply your own name repackaged, use account-level and campaign-level exclusions properly, and keep a conventional search campaign running alongside as a control.

The honest part

You will never get the granularity a manual search campaign gives you. The question is whether it performs, not whether it is transparent, and that judgement needs a control group to be worth anything.

What we need from you

The access and paperwork a Google Ads project actually runs on. Gathering these early is the difference between starting in week one and starting in week four.

The Google Ads account itself

Admin access on your own account ID, not a sub-account belonging to us. The performance history is what the bidding algorithms learn from, and it should stay with you if we ever part company.

Usually held byYou. If an agency currently owns your account, ask for it back before anything else happens

Tag and tracking access

Google tag, plus GA4 and Tag Manager where they exist. We normally rebuild conversion tracking before touching a single bid, because everything downstream depends on it.

Usually held byWhoever installed the tags, which is sometimes nobody

The ability to edit landing pages

Ads can only qualify the traffic. The page decides whether it converts, and being unable to change it removes half the available improvement.

Usually held byYour web developer or marketing team

Billing on your own card

Spend goes on your payment method, invoiced to you by Google directly. We do not hold client ad budgets and we would be wary of an agency that offers to.

Usually held byYour finance team

What a lead is actually worth

Close rate and average deal value, even roughly. Without them we are optimising cost per lead — the wrong target entirely if half those leads could never have bought.

Usually held bySales, or whoever keeps the pipeline

The exclusion list from sales

The enquiries you do not want: students, job applicants, resellers, the states you cannot ship to. It becomes the negative keyword list on day one instead of in month four.

Usually held byWhoever answers the phone

How engagements are structured

Three shapes cover most of what we do. Which one fits depends on where you are, and we will say so on the first call rather than quoting the largest one.

Account audit, fixed scope

Suits

Something is wrong and you want an independent read before changing agency or budget.

Shape

About two weeks. Structure, tracking, search terms and landing pages, written up with the fixes ranked by what they are likely to return.

Managed retainer

Suits

Ongoing spend where somebody needs to own structure, creative testing, negatives and the bidding strategy.

Shape

Continuous management with a monthly review. Fee agreed as a flat monthly figure or as a share of spend — we will tell you which is cheaper for you at your level, including when that answer is not the one we would prefer.

Build and hand over

Suits

You have someone in-house who can run it day to day but not set it up from nothing.

Shape

A fixed build — campaigns, tracking, negatives, naming conventions — then training and a documented handover. Occasional check-ins after that if you want them.

When this is the wrong thing to buy

Paid search rewards a specific set of conditions. Where they are missing it burns money faster than any other channel we sell.

  • The monthly budget is very small. Below a certain point there is not enough conversion data for the bidding to learn, and management fees start eating the spend itself. Local SEO and a properly built Google Business Profile are usually the better first purchase.
  • Nobody is searching for your category yet. Google Ads captures existing demand — it cannot manufacture it. New categories need social, content and patience.
  • Follow-up is slow. Paid leads decay within hours. If enquiries sit until the next working morning, you are buying attention and then discarding it — fix that first, with a CRM and an instant WhatsApp acknowledgement, and it will cost less than a month of wasted clicks.
  • You are in a restricted category. Google limits or prohibits advertising for several sectors, and we will check yours before you pay us anything.

Google Ads — Common Questions

What budget do I need for Google Ads?

Enough to buy meaningful data in your market — that depends on your city, industry and average cost per click. In the consultation we look up real CPC ranges for your keywords and calculate what monthly spend a sensible lead target implies, before you commit anything.

Why is my current cost per lead so high?

The usual culprits: broad match keywords without negatives, ads sending traffic to a generic homepage, slow landing pages, and conversion tracking that counts the wrong things. An account audit typically finds most of the waste within the first review.

Do you work on a percentage of ad spend?

We price management on scope of work, not as an incentive to inflate your budget. Ad spend goes directly from your account to Google — you keep full ownership and visibility of the account at all times.

Google Ads or SEO — which should I choose?

They answer different problems: Google Ads buys immediate visibility, SEO builds durable, lower-cost visibility over time. Most businesses that depend on inbound leads eventually run both — ads for volume today, SEO to bring acquisition costs down tomorrow.
